The plight of low-income teens facing poor nutrition is heart-wrenching. These teens lack access to nutritious food options and must make the difficult choice between what is affordable and what is healthy. The consequences of this struggle include a higher risk of diet-related health problems, low energy levels, and a bleak future filled with health issues. Every teen deserves a fair shot at a healthy life.
Teens for Food Justice
At the forefront of the fight against food insecurity is Teens for Food Justice (TFFJ), a youth-led organization dedicated to ending the cycle of diet-related poor health outcomes. These young leaders are working to empower their communities and tackle the issue of food insecurity head-on through school-based hydroponic farming.
With a focus on promoting healthy eating habits and access to nutritious food options, TFFJ is making a difference in the lives of low-income teens, who are disproportionately impacted by poor diet-related health outcomes. By taking action and leading the charge, these young people are creating a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Miami Gala
On March 20, 2019, Teens for Food Justice hosted a fundraising event in Miami where supporters gathered to enjoy a meal and listen to speakers. Tara Smith Swibel spoke about the community’s need for access to food and brought attention to the fact that 115,000 children in Miami would go to bed hungry that night. Alberto Carvalho, the Superintendent of Miami Dade Schools, also emphasized the importance of this issue and noted that many students rely on the school’s lunch as their final meal of the day.
Partnering with Ponix
At the fundraising gala, Teens for Food Justice showcased their solution to the issue of food insecurity: hydroponic gardening. The event was made even more special with the help of Ponix, who partnered with Teens for Food Justice to display their Future Farmer Kit, a classroom garden, as the centerpiece of the event. This was a great opportunity for attendees to see the impact of hydroponic gardening first-hand and understand the importance of supporting organizations like Teens for Food Justice.
At the gala, supporters got to witness how hydroponic farming not only helps low-income teens meet their basic food needs but also gives them a chance to learn about nutrition and farming. This innovative solution not only addresses the immediate issue of hunger but also provides a long-term educational benefit for the students involved.
Results
At the end of the gala, supporters came together to raise the final $25,000 needed to bring two hydroponic farms to the schools. The event was a huge success, raising over $650,000, which was four times the original goal. Alberto Carvalho spoke about the significance of this accomplishment and shared his personal story as a poor, immigrant child who was once homeless. He emphasized that providing nutritious food to the youth of Miami gives children, like himself, the peace of mind that their basic needs will be met. The funds raised at the event will have a profound impact on the lives of low-income teens in Miami.
